I am Ashley. A woman in a gemstone business and I have been involved in the mining business for a very long time since the year 2008, but in the back ground having been involved in a relationship to a gemstone miner and dealer Percy. For so many years, I only observed and helped where necessary but not being very active, all this changed in 2017 when I got my first gemstone trading license (Reserved Mineral License) with the license I am legally allowed to buy, hold and sell all colored stones found in Malawi. Through the same license I can export my gemstones to any corner of the world from Malawi. I buy from Artisanal and Small Scale miners across the country and value add the stones before putting them on the market locally and internationally.
Beside trading of gemstones as myself, I also run the family business, Maleta Gems and Jewels, as its Administrative and Marketing Executive.
I am a member of various gemstone groups such as Malawi Women in Mining Association (MAWIMA), Gemstone Association of Malawi (GAM) and a member of Women in Mining, Energy, Extractive, Mining and Craft. (WOMEECIM).
Challenges facing women miners are many but decided to make use of the positives to advance in the business dominated by men. My biggest satisfaction in this business is when a customer smiles for the good gemstones sold or service rendered – this motivates me and want to do even better. My favorite gemstone is garnet.
